Not only do I write, but I do a lot of reading (in my opinion all good writers are also good readers) and like every reader I have my favorite authors. One of my favorites is Jeri Smith Ready. Recently she published a novella that completes her “Shade” trilogy (well, it’s really Shade 3.5, but so not complaining about it).
“Shattered” is Zachery’s story, told after his release from solitary. I’m not going to tell you anymore about the release or why he was in solitary (please read the books to find out), but I will tell you that “Shattered” is an emotional roller-coaster that will wring you dry. The subject is one that not many authors touch on (PTSD and coping strategies) and Smith Ready does a fabulous job showing how Zachery returns to life.
This is a novella not only for fans of the series, but also for families and even people dealing with this issue themselves. It is a subject that many of us have heard of, but don’t know how to deal with in our own daily lives. And I think Smith Ready shows us just how detrimental it can be.
“Shattered” is a free download at Smith Ready’s blog and you can buy the other books (Shine, Shift, and Shade) in the series at amazon.com, b&n.com, or your local bookstore. I highly recommend the entire series. “Shattered” might be a bit difficult to understand without reading the rest of the series, but it’s been about a year since I read the series and I was easily able to follow it.
